a reentry into Wongo's world

I’m coming home again!  Here I am sitting in the Ft. Lauderdale airport and the first thing I want to do is make a post, naturally. Got a little Q and A sesh with my favorite Aussie, Wongo, as promised. Not to mention a few unblogged tracks! Read what this guy has got to say. We’re always looking for new insight into the future of the industry and Wongo’s got a couple of thoughts you’ll enjoy.

Squeegie: Hey Wongo, Where are you coming to us from today?

Wongo: I’m at the moment sitting in my kitchen burning cds for tonight with adam bozzetto. Gonna be a massssssive night!!!

S: Cool, cool, pretty jealous.  So how’s the surf today?

W: I live 40M from the beach and I would have NO IDEA how it is. I’m one of those guys that finishes work goes straight to my studio either to stare at a blank screen or write some shit lol.

S: haha, whoops, my bad. Let’s get down to the music.  You make “wig-out” house.  Please explain that genre.  Who else makes wig-out?

W: Ha wig out is just another name for fucked up weird house music. Shit that doesn’t exactly sound right stuff peeps are like “are you sure that’s gonna work on a dance floor”. Haha that sorta shit, I believe that peeps like Hijack, Rene Van Munster, Brabe, Jeff Doubleu, Campbell make this shit. its ALWAYS a challenge to put my own music on at my gigs cause I’m not sure if it always works. makes it more fun.

S: Okay, so that said, what’s the club/DJ scene like out there? Is your sound typical for the area? Or is that Wongo sound just as individualized out there as it is here?

W: MY AREA……. is straight up Blue Vein.. old/burnt out/typical cheese. Or the french house noisey stuff. I very rarely play in my own town of the Gold Coast, for this reason. Instead I’m starting my own night here and pushing all the shit that they should already be into ;).

S: Haha, speaking of noisey stuff, you say that you don’t always go for peak-time drops, so what time slot do you like to play?

W: Yeah I love big builds and big epic peak time tunes but I steer away from it cause I like to keep it different and all wiggy. My MOST FAVOURITE set time is 3 till 6. But I do like to bang it out as well from the 1 till 3 set. Depends on the vibe the club has.

S: Nice.  You have stayed pretty consistent in your production.  Do you see yourself moving in any new direction, or are you comfortable where you’re at?

W: Yeah I feel like my music is always moving forward production wise but with Wongo I like to keep it wiggy. That’s what people expect/want/enjoy so I’ll keep it mackin. I’ve started a new alias with a friend which is on a very very tech house tip, which i feel is my outlet for all the techno i love. keep your ears pealed ;)

S: Oh yes, my ears are always open to some new Wongo.  Do you have any tour dates or upcoming shows that you’re excited about?  Where is your favorite place to play?

W: Umm next tour is in April doing around the world trip again, Holland, UK, USA, Mexico and hopefully south afrika if i can sneak down there. my favourite place to play is DEFINITLY with no second thoughts Piera De La Iguana – Oaxaca – Mexico.. I don’t think ill ever play a gig better than that, can’t wait till april to go there again. EPIC!!!! Fillipo Gestaldi is the MAN!!!

S: I guess I’ll have to head down there!  Who do you think is killing it right now?  Anyone you see getting big in the remainder of 2009?

W: Right now i think 2009 main acts are already set out people like Oliver $, Riva Starr, Lee Mortimer. they are all massive. NEXT YEAR i think Hijack is going to go mental. His new stuff is going to wow every crowd around the world. But I think also people like Tom Flyn, Justin Martin, Jacob London. I think they will be doing massive things next year. The tech house scene is coming on STRONG.

S: So I have a feeling you enjoy most of the guys you listed above, but when you’re kickin’ it at home, whom are you usually jammin’ to?

W: I don’t really get at home chilling time. I’m always working or working on something or out. Sorta sux sometimes but I spose I do love all the old bboy music such as MFSB, The Bongolian, Incredible Bongo Band, James Brown, Manilla Thrilla, The Mg’s and ALL the above.

S: Keepin’ it old skool.  I like it.  Gotta ask the ever popular question, who are your top five to play out?

W: Ummm top 5 peeps i play out would have to be, Hijack, Solid Groove, Nic Sarno, Ruffcut and Jesse Rose I think.

S: Love them all. A lot.  Do you have any upcoming releases to get psyched for?

W: YES!! of course. Got a couple of new remixes coming out on Sweat it out. Ajax’s label which should go down really well. And also a remix I am doing with Hijack for Poligono – Caguama Noise. That one surely is my most exciting. All original work is staying under wraps atm haha

S: Helllll ya.  A Wongo remix of Hijack cannot go wrong!  Got anything else to tell all the Squeegie readers out there?

W: UMMMMM drugs are bad?  Cheers!

S: That they are…that they are ;) Thanks man, keep up the great work!

These three are unblogged, so let’s call ‘em Squeegie exclusives

Justin James – Jack With Us (Wongo Mix)

Tricky – Council Estate (Antonelli & Wongo Remix)
