Nic Sarno is, without a doubt, one of my favorite producers of 2009. His ‘Heads Up’, ‘Eurostarr’, and upcoming Steed Lord remixes are giant and he never disappoints. With this in mind, I was really excited when I found out that we’d be interviewing him here at Squeegie. Keep an eye out for his Steed Lord remix, his upcoming EP, and his side project which he talks about later. Without further ado, Nic Sarno (got some tracks for you at the end of the interview).

Squeegie: Ok, so the Italian house scene has blown up in the past two or three years a lot. To us, it seems like a whole different world over there, just too much talent. Do you feel proud to be an Italian producer? How’s your relationship with other Italian artists like Crookers, Congorock, and the Bloody Beetroots?

Squeegie: Allora, la scena italiana e cresciuta durante nel passato due o tre anni molto. A noi, sembra un mondo completamente differente, c’e troppo talento. Senti orgoglioso essere un produttore italiano? Com’e tuo rapporto con tutti artisti italiani come Crookers, Congo, e i Bloody Beetroots?

Nic Sarno: It’s more than pride, it seems exaggerated, I am really happy about it. I’m happy that finally there is again the possibility of being italian while also being considered a producer of electronic music. Up until a couple of years ago the one chance that you had to go out of Europe if your aspirations were to go a bit further, the idea to dj in some places in you city… now with the internet it forms kind of a global community, in which I believe it takes into account talent more effectively than just in your location. In that sense I look at my relationships with Crookers, Congorock, and the Bloody Beetroots, we’re friends. Phra and Bot for me are family… I started to produce more seriously with them. I remember in 2005/2006 when we were searching to make productions in a certain style, and the distributors said that that sound would never work (this is classic in Italy… you have to know that the force for the love of someones culture is kind of crazy sometimes, for which the talent becomes known only after it’s been approved in America and England. The same goes for Rocco (Congorock), I consider him above all a friend, let alone an amazing producer.

Nic Sarno: Più che di orgoglio, che mi sembra esagerato, parlerei di felicità….sono contento che finalmente sia di nuovo possibile essere italiano e allo stesso tempo essere considerato un produttore di musica “elettronica”.

Fino a qualche anno fa l’unica chance che avevi era quella di andare oltremanica se le tue aspirazioni andavano un po oltre l’idea di fare il dj in qualche locale della tua città…..ora con internet si è formata questa sorta di comunità globale, nella quale credo conti di più l’effettivo talento piuttosto che la provenienza geografica.

Per quello che riguarda la mia relazione con Crks, Congo e BB, siamo amici, Phra e Bot per me sono di famiglia…..ho iniziato a produrre in modo più serio con loro.

Ricordo nel 2005/2006 quando cercavamo di farci produrre le prime cose su quello stile e i distributori di allora ci dicevano che questo tipo di sound non avrebbe mai funzionato ( questo è un classico dell’italia…devi sapere che qui vige un’esterofilia quasi patologica, percui il talento viene riconosciuto solo dopo che è stato approvato in America e in Inghilterra).

Anche per Rocco vale lo stesso, lo considero un’ amico prima ancora che un ottimo produttore.

S: How do you feel about the American scene?

S: Come senti della scena Americana?

NS: The American scene was really the first to influence me… when I started to listen how the djs in America were so fresh… people like DJ Sneak, Masters at Work, DJ Pierre, Lil’ Louis, AVH. Also how the sound from Detroit, people influenced me in how I make my music today. I’ll always love the attitude towards the rhythm and the attention to bass in the American sound. Its different from the English, or German, the American style is more visceral, immediate, powerful, it’s a bit less intellectual, more effective for the dancefloor. I also gotta talk about American hip hop, producers like RZA, DJ Premier, Dilla & Madlib.

For that look at some new producers, starting with the T&B crew, Fool’s Gold, Mad Decent, & Dirtybird. Also the group of producers that are a part of the Brainfeeder gang, Flying Lotus above all.

NS: Be, la scena americana è stata la prima ad influenzarmi…quando ho iniziato a suonare come dj erano in america le cose più fresche…gente come dj Sneak, i Masters At Work, dj Pierre, Lil Louis, Van Helden, come anche il suono di Detroit, hanno inffluenzato moltissimo il mio modo di fare musica. Quello che ho sempre amato del suono americano è la sua attitudine al ritmo e l’attenzione al basso.

A differenza del suono per es Inglese, o tedesco, quello americano è più viscerale…immediato….potente, è meno intellettuale, perfetto per il dancefloor.

Per non parlare dell’hip hop, e di produttori come RZA e Premiere o Dilla e Madlib.

Per quello che riguarda i nuovi produttori, seguo dagli inizi le crew Trouble&Bass, Fool’s Gold, Mad Decent e Dirtybird.

E la banda di produttori che gira intorno a Brainfeeder….Flying Lotus su tutti.

S: Which producers impress you at the moment?

S: Quale produttori ti imprimono adesso?

NS: There are some really talented people going around right now, mainly I’ve been really impressed with Douster, Momma’s Boy, Roska, Congorock & His Majesty Andre, Brabe, Hudmo and Rustie.

S: What are your top 5 “bangers” in your sets right now?

S: Anything planned in the future for Nic Sarno? An EP, any remixes?

S: Qualche cose nuova da Nic Sarno nel futuro? Un’ EP, remixes?

NS: I have a remix coming out soon for CLP and Steed Lord and I’ve finished a remix for Buraka on Fabric Records… then a collaboration with Mikix the cat… another one with Congo we’re finally doing after a long time of speaking of working together. I’ve also almost finished mixing the first album of my side priject The Love Supreme, it’s a collective project, really proud of it, it will come out of the English Tirk (label),  it doesn’t center around anything the sounds I’ve been doing as nic sarno. I also have a collaboration with Phra and Bot for the soundtrack of an important video game, for the moment I can’t tell you any more, it’s a secret.. Then i want to dedicate some time for my next EP.

NS: Ho dei rmx di imminente uscita per CLP e Steed Lord e ho finito da poco il remix per i Buraka Som Sistema per Fabric rec…poi una collabo con Mikix The Cat…..anche con Congo da un po di tempo parliamo di fare qualcosa in combo.

Ho anche appena finito il mixaggio del primo album del mio side project The Love Supreme, è un progetto collettivo, a cui tengo molto, uscirà sull’inglese Tirk, e non centra niente con il suono che sto facendo come Nic Sarno. In piu’ ho appena chiuso una traccia in collaborazione con Phra e Bot, per la colonna sonora di un video game davvero importante, ma al momento non posso dire niente di piu’, è una sorpresa.

Poi voglio mettermi al lavoro sul mio prossimo EP.

S: How did the steed lord remix come about?

S: Come fatto il remix di Steed lord presentarsi?

NS: I was contacted by Mega on myspace and he asked me if I would participate in their remix album. I accepted immediately. Steed Lord got some swag.

NS: Mega mi ha contattato su myspace chiedendomi se mi andava di partecipare al loro remix album. e io ho accettato subito.

S: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

S: Se potresti collaborare con chiunque sul un track, chi sara?

NS: I dunno, there are really so many musicians that I love. If i could choose one maybe it would be Aphex twin…but i don’t know If he would be down :)

NS: Non saprei, ci sono davvero molti musicisti che amo.

Se dovessi proprio dirne uno forse Aphex Twin….ma non so se lui sarebbe d’accordo :)

S: How did you get started in the electronic music scene?

S: Come hai ricevuto il tuo inizio con la scene elettronica?

NS: I was in a tangle, many years ago, I was walking around thinking about what I would do, when through the clouds and rain came a most bright light, a kind of bright light… from the start i was frightened, but then I came closer and saw it well. From the light I saw two tables and a mixer, and a voice told me: you will make people dance!!! .

NS: Ero in un bosco, molti anni fa, camminavo pensando ai fatti miei, quando dal cielo piove una luce fortissima, una specie di cono di luce cosmica….all’inizio ero spaventato, poi mi sono avvicinato per vedere bene, e dalla luce appaiono due piatti e un mixer, e una voce mi dice: Tu farai ballare la gente!!! :)

S: What’s your favorite pasta dish?

S: Quale piatto di pasta preferisci?

NS: Pasta Boys.
