a conversation with Bassnectar
Hello Squeegieland. So Orpheus and I were lucky enough to hang out with Bassnectar before his show the other day in Chicago at the House of Blues. We didn’t really do a traditional interview, it was more of a long-running conversation about everything that is music. It’s a bit long but we promise it’s worth it, biggups to Elliot Dunworthy, Daysha Taylor, Bassnectar, and everyone else involved.

seen it really nice!

November 16th, 2009 at 12:23First of let me say that I am the “fucking idiot” that Lorin addresses at the six minute mark of this interview.
A while back I posted a link to a blog entry on Lorin’s myspace page to my Twitter where he condemns a portion of dubstep music as boring and overall uninspiring. My pointing this out to him resulted in him attacking me through four tweets back to me where he referred to me as “closed-minded” a “douche” and a few other choice names. These tweets were subsequently deleted, I assume by Lorin in an attempt to save face from showing a side of his personality where he addresses his followers in such a manner.
As someone who has paid for numerous events he has headlined and purchased his music on Beatport to say his response left me angry and disenfranchised as someone who supported him financially and through playing his tracks in my club sets is putting it mildly.
I for one am glad this interview was not edited or censored so that everybody who takes the time to watch it can see how Lorin feels about anybody who offers a contrary opinion to his own. It is unfortunate that this is the image he seems to take pride in making public; I hope that one day he can be as accepting of other people and their ideas as he claims to be about the diversity of music. The relationships formed with people throughout ones lifetime are perhaps the single thing more important than music.
November 16th, 2009 at 12:38Lol @ dubstep. This fool plays brostep
November 16th, 2009 at 12:54Love it! Man, jealous you guys got to chill with Bassnectar
November 16th, 2009 at 14:15@shortstack, bassnectar i hope does not actually think youre a fucking idiot. i mean, as improper as it is we call each other ‘fucking idiots’ all the time. really a very minor detail and im sure you can work it out with him. i agree with him too, SO MUCH dubstep is boring and uninspiring, just like SO MUCH house and indie and hip hop and country and reggae and rock. this is just music, and its why we commissioned this interview. i hope you guys take from this that bassnectar’s a tight guy whos not too high up on his horse to talk to us! i mean, after lollapalooza we basically idealized this guy, and a few months later our writers were chatting with him about music just like he was a good buddy.
ill leave it at that.
November 16th, 2009 at 14:46p.s., somebody’s got to show that part to kid kaio!
November 16th, 2009 at 14:48+1 to mac’s comment, took the words out of my mouth
re: p.s. im on it!
November 16th, 2009 at 14:51I hold no ill will towards Lorin and I absolutely commend him on his success over the past few years. I do not respect name calling and all I ask is should he actually want to address any comments I or others have made he is welcome to contact me directly to clarify any misunderstandings. It would be far more appreciated than hearing name calling in regards to a months old comment I made.
November 16th, 2009 at 15:04HA. Please. If you’re an artist with any kind of perspective, you see holes in the music scene you exist in and you work to do something different. Were their BLAH aspects of the dubstep scene? Well, that’s for each to decide, but there’s nothing wrong with listening to others who make music you’re interested in and saying hey- I see potential here, but I don’t see anyone making music exactly like what I want to make.. And I’m bored with what’s here, so let me run with this and see what I can come up with. That’s not negative. That’s where ALL innovation comes from. If you listen to something and think it’s perfect as it is, you use it as it is and nothing new comes from it.
November 16th, 2009 at 15:05thank you so much for sharing your love for music. This interview was awesome.. love the perspective of Lorin behind the camera :)
November 16th, 2009 at 17:00love & gratitude
Dope interview – glad I get to sit around at work and watch it!
November 16th, 2009 at 19:30big ups squeeeeeeeegieeeee massive! thanks so much! this was super fun.
to be clear:
1. i didnt mean any offense with the ‘fucking idiot’ comment. i was not actually singling anyone out, this was in response to MULTIPLE people who all leapt to the hype of online hating, jumping to conclusions, misconstruing my words, etc
2. if you read the blog in question that i wrote, it was MANY moons ago, it was written in DEFENSE of dubstep, to my fan base who was hating on dubstep at the time, and i was explaining how/why i enjoy it, but in doing so was informing the readers that i could relate. i did so by pointing out detractions of dubstep itself, as well as detractions of all night non stop dubstep.
but i definitely didnt mean to single anyone out. i didnt use names, and i didnt mean offense at all.
i think critique is awesome, even better: constructive critique.
i use the F word a lot too.
but i gotta say, i am frusterated at anyone who misconstrues my very carefully worded blogs
anyone i know who has read that blog understands exactly what i was saying.
so yeah, it was frustrating to have haters going around online saying i had no right to play or make dubstep because i had once *dared* to criticize it.
but i do sincerely apologize for any offense
:)
back to squeegie sounds you guys are THE BOMB
much love
-Lorin
November 16th, 2009 at 21:58What an amazing, down to earth, no bullshit video. I have to comment on the topic of playing repeat tracks when on tour. I just went to the GR show and to be honest expected more. Wait, let me first say that bassnectar music has changed my life and has given me an outlet when shit gets all fucked up in life. Anyways, I came from Kalamazoo with a party bus that I organized full of 25 absolutely die hard bassnectar fans. So we listened to superdre(who was pretty dope) and were just so fucking ready to get pulverized by some massive sub bass. Looking at those PK’s was like looking at the candy wall at charlie’s chocolate factory, I just wanted to lick it. Show started and first drop hit……..wheres the bass? Confused I got back into rage mode and figured we were just startin off slow. Well to make a long story short, it never got close to the level that I am used to hearing at a bassnectar show, but I AM NOT HERE TO COMPLAIN! Basically before I heard you @ Lolla, I had just heard the emalkay track, the jantsen mix, this way, that close your eyes track, etc. So when you played them at lolla I was just blown the fuck away cuz no one knew what was going on and it was beautiful cuz I did. So in GR, I had some tracks in my mind that I figured you would play….like…..that nero ghosts n stuff. Instead I heard MIMS and a couple other commercial stuff. Dont get me wrong, my favorite commerical mashups are bassnectar live edits. Theres nothing better but the difference I see is for example……This is why im hot vs missy eliliot work it……….The work it sample with those dope lyrics over it…FUCKING INSANITY! but that MIMS I have heard last year from you so I was like….isnt this a new tour? Ok so now that im done trying to criticize and sound like a dick, I want to state my main point. Over all this stuff that confused me about that show, I still am driving from Michigan to San Francisco for NYE set because I know that there is no other DJ that can throw it down like Lorin can. The way he layers, mashes, smashes, edits, fixes…..its live mixing at its finest people. Im going to see rusko soon and prretty much know what im gonna get. With bassnectar I know Im gonna dance at all sorts of tempos from slow grimey punch you in the face dub, hyperdub breakbeat, hip hop, or yea some dunkelbunt so I can bust out my swing moves my grandma taught me.
So basically when it comes to playing the same tracks and all that junk, just do whatever the fuck you want bro! Seriously….we trust you, and its impossible to please everyone. Some people come to your shows thinking they just want to hear 70 bpm dub all night, or 8 hours of dnb like you said. But thats not the beauty of what you do. DO YOU!!!
See you NYE, and hopefully DEMF, Roth, and Lolla.
