a brief history
I’m compiling a playlist of essential dubstep songs for a friend currently, and would like to hear what tunes people think NEED to be on this playlist. Below are a few I’ve chosen, but I need some reader’s help rounding out this list. Please put your additions in the comment section. As always, show Skream, Loefah, and Martyn some support and buy their music.
Skream – Midnight Request Line (128)
Loefah – Mud (128)
Martyn – Vancouver (128)

Britney Spears – Freakshow
November 15th, 2009 at 16:35wobbles don’t make it dubstep ;)
November 15th, 2009 at 16:39Rusko – Woo Boost
November 15th, 2009 at 17:13Chase & Status – Eastern Jam
suhk knight- diesel not petrol—–> its different and cool
tekone———————————–> any of their songs they are flith but not too fucked up (mostly) e.g. ‘broken string’ or ‘hate’ or ‘mate’
caspa – wheres my money–> …
excision and datsik – swagga—> brutal yet accessible
rusko – Go Go Gadget—> Loved this song when i started listning to dub.
btw this is my favorite blog!
November 15th, 2009 at 17:22Borgore – Ice Cream
November 15th, 2009 at 17:38Still Dre (Dubstep Refix) – Mikey B feat Ill Bill Bachelor
:D
mala – alicia
matty g – 50k (loefah remix)
bar 9 – murda sound vip
burial – unite
benga & coki – night [OBVIOUSLY]
digital mystikz – anti war dub
joker & ginz – re-up
jakes – justice
the others – africa (original mix not vip)
pinch – punisher
zomby – float
horsepower productions – golden nugget
distance – victim support
…etc.
November 15th, 2009 at 17:48Not really a classic but awesome as hell.
November 15th, 2009 at 18:52Mt Eden Dubstep – Sirrea Leone
if you wanna go with essentials:
rusko – cockney thug
rusko – mr. chips
the prodigy – breathe (numbernin6 remix)
BOLTAN – nine to five (dz remix)
dz & kozee – crack
and others.
November 15th, 2009 at 19:09yo, Boris knows what’s going on. That list is beautiful.
November 15th, 2009 at 19:25some of the brostep wobble shit you people are reccomending make me sick. DZ, Tek-One and fucking BOREGORE are NOT essential, they’re just fucking dime-a-dozen, “lets make this tune like SO HARSH” wank merchants. Their productions are unoriginal and scatterbrained, too many overpowering and unenjoyable wobble wanks.
November 15th, 2009 at 19:26Essential?
V – Distance
Pop Pop VIP – Vex’d
Spyro – Headhunter
night, mr chips, all the mainstream-breakers obviously
2-D by Skream and Love is Real by Rusko – some depth and ingenuity to the genre
Africa by The Others.
Gorgon Sound by Horsepower Productions – Show them where it came from.
yea excellent 1 with gorgon sound!
November 15th, 2009 at 19:27These are all tracks that have a made a difference in dubstep
In for the Kill (Skream remix) – La Roux
Burnin – Coki
I don’t give a dub – Cotti
Bonkers (Doorly remix) – Dizzee Rascal
Saxon – Chase & Status
November 15th, 2009 at 19:32id say…
November 15th, 2009 at 19:53loefah – disco rekah
16 bit – twice
dancing in the dark (ollie &bare noize VIP)
anything by El-b
Synkro – Inhale
bassnectars super stylin smashup
and just for the heavyness
Datsik – Calypso
Inner Party Soundsystem – Numbernin6 Remix
nine to five dz remix as a dubstep essential? i mean its solid… but i wouldnt say that solid.
i would add
rusko – jahova – a great example of reggae’s influence on the dubstep sound
b.rich – everyday hustle (ac slater remix) – made me a believer
joker & ginz – purple city
benga – crunked up
joker – snake eater – really shows how diverse dubstep can get
any song along the lines of caspa’s “I remember” remix, gotta respect the melodic side of the genre, its not all about crazy noises
any of skream’s floor murderes – the gut-wrenching, stomach destroying kind of bass you hear in songs like his in for the kill remix. im really just referring to those dubstep songs that sound like shit on a laptop, but when you hear it one a real system… BOOM.
pretty much anything by burial, and any act associated with hyperdub.
oh and props on keyboard cat. a classic.

November 15th, 2009 at 21:59Joe, your a wank.
dub is so diverse and if someone was making me a playlist and every song on it was purple, minimal/ whatever i probly wouldnt like it. if it had variety then maybe they will like some of the songs, those songs might even be “Brostep wobble shit”. which would make them “wank merchants”.
P.s JSaxton im lovin your tunes
November 16th, 2009 at 00:05can’t believe no one has mentioned this one yet:
Excision & Datsik – Do It Now
November 16th, 2009 at 02:03the thing about excision and datsik is that some of their stuff is just too heavy – there’s not a real melody or beat to it,it’s just a filthy bassline which, for a set that would be perfect – datsik’s sets are legendary (apparently it’s just moshing) and if that’s your thing then they’re right up your street.
November 16th, 2009 at 04:42but sometimes you just gotta keep it simple, back to basics, all those cliches.
stuff like alicia by mala is magical just because of it’s simplicity.
delight by distance is another one i recommend everybody to check – sleep to that stuff.
datsik and excision are sick – no doubt about it but sometimes it’s too much..
not hating on anybody.
just trying to make a point..
This is a tragedy…
Kromestar-My Sound
Song or album… Get it, bitches
That’s some real wobble shit.
November 16th, 2009 at 04:45stagga – lopside
not for everyone, but a very solid and original dubstep track.
makes me think of a rave at a mental asylum and everyones dancing around in straight jackets losing their miiiinds haha
November 16th, 2009 at 04:57dutty dubs – structured madness
one of the older more to the point songs that come to mind. but at the moment definitely diggin anything from vaski excision datsik etc. just so heavy.
one other song that always sticks out for me but isnt an essential would be
La roux – Bulletproof (Foamo Dubstep Remix)
good way of getting people involved bro. keep the good stuff comin
November 16th, 2009 at 05:42Ancient Memories (Skream remix)
Afrika VIP
November 16th, 2009 at 07:40Kalawanji (not number 2) – Kromestar
Depend On You – Skyence
Mala – Level Nine
Masterblaster – Stenchman
Froggy Style – The Widdler
9 Samurai – Kode9
November 16th, 2009 at 07:48almost anything by caspa and/or rusko (hammertime and the obvious, jahova)
i like the caspa remix of i remember by deadmau5 and kaskade, has some nice wobbles, not sure if it qualifies as dubstep though
check out this underground shit too, a duba fett mix
http://soundcloud.com/improv/jah-love-mix-by-duba-fett-aka-improv
November 16th, 2009 at 10:17the i remember remix is definitely dubstep. the thing you’ve got to remember is that dubstep is as much about the rhythm as the melodies, so even though that remix might not have some of the staple sounds of dubstep, it’s still got the rhythm.
November 16th, 2009 at 10:52here are some…
Bass Clef – Cannot Be Straightened
November 16th, 2009 at 11:03Snoop Dogg – Drop It Like It’s Hot (Grime Remix by ??)
TC – Where’s My Money? (Caspa Dubstep Remix)
La Roux – Bulletproof (Foamo Dubstep Remix)
foamo is not and will never be essential dubstep. he’s an awesome musician, but lets face it, dubstep is not his forte
November 16th, 2009 at 11:18i agree scribbles but it is interesting that two people have mentioned it now.
foamo is still ill.
November 16th, 2009 at 11:45george lenton – troll
flux pavilion – steppa
tom encore – jig
skism (16 bit remix) – the blank
joker – digidesign
rusko – jahova
datsik / excision – swagga
culprate – graverobber
distance – nightvision or ska
BMTH (tek-one remix) – sleep with one eye open
16 bit – can you show me what head is
ellie goulding (jakwob remix) – starry eyed
that list right there suffers no repetition, each song is different and has a completely different vibe , that is a amazingly diverse line up of dubstep.
enjoy it all!
awesome blog BTW
November 16th, 2009 at 12:44Hmmm.
Imma lay down a few tunes that should be considered..
Skream – Summer Dreams.
Benga – Pleasure
Stagga – Sick As Sin (Feat. Skamma)
Bar 9 – Midnight
The Others – Africa VIP
MJ Cole – Sincere (Nero Remix)
L Wiz – Girl From Codeine City
Coki – Goblin
Radikal Guru – Strong Dub
Search & Destroy – Candyfloss (Loefah Remix)
These might be a bit old, but I would consider these essential, and i’ll keep hold of em until they become so used they are unplayable.
November 16th, 2009 at 13:27agree with a bunch already mentioned (Night, Where’s My Money, Afrika, In For the Kill, etc) if you’re trying to give him/her some good breakthrough songs. are you trying to get a good overview of everything dubstep has to offer, and have it be essential in that way, or just super huge hits that everyone in dubstep knows? seems as though you’re going for the latter. in any case
Caspa – Big Headed Slags
November 16th, 2009 at 14:30Emalkay – When I Look At You (if you’re talking recent essentials)
Skream – Rutten
DZ – Down
i would encourage you guys to re-read the post: mac is talkin *essential* dubstep, for people who aren’t familiar with it, not necessarily the five dubstep tracks you’ve been feelin’ for the past couple days. bela makes a good point as well, in that it can be hard to differentiate between truly good dubstep, and shit that gets played a lot because it has wonks and wobbles. although thats not to say that wonks and wobbles cant make a good dubstep track
November 16th, 2009 at 14:36yea, thanks everyone for the good feedback, keep it comin. what im really trying to do here is kind of make a timeline so that my friend can see the history from when the genre started (horsepower, stuff hatcha was playing in the early 2000′s) up until now. definitely girl from coedine city for me hosta, nice one.
November 16th, 2009 at 14:40Coki – Goblin
November 16th, 2009 at 15:08Chase & Status – Saxon
Stagga – Sick as sin
Cotti & Cluekid – Sensi Dub
Datsik – Retreat
if you’re looking that early, maybe put on some el-b or some more horsepower.
November 16th, 2009 at 15:09both are pretty old school and important in the development of the genre.
or just hit that guy up with the hatcha ’02 studio mix.
November 16th, 2009 at 15:11that’s on blackdown somewhere..
indeed! big mix, gotta large up blackdown every time
November 16th, 2009 at 15:26wow… thank you everyone. This has actually provided me some real chrons…

November 16th, 2009 at 20:23thanks muchly for the feedback. ive got a good list right now but could really use some help filling in the gaps between say 2003 to 2006.

Deadmau5 – I Remember (Caspa Remix)
Skream – Rottan
Skream – Trapped in a Dark Bubble
Ultrablack – Bear Trap (Excision Remix)

November 17th, 2009 at 10:32Thats my 2 cents!
Oh and after this list is compiled, you should post it here so we can try and dig up the ones we don’t have!
November 17th, 2009 at 10:34Vancouver isn’t really dubstep more IDM
Personally without giving anybody grief
it depends what you want, spacey epileptic or just bassy, grimey etc
I’d recommend artists along the lines of Martyn, Joker, Roska, Kode 9, Ikonika, Burial and Zomby maybe the Widdler and Skream and Jakes
p.s. I’m sick of noobs who just want bass, why leave music constrained by wobble?
November 17th, 2009 at 17:49Doctor P – Sweet shop
16 bit – shallow
Joy Orbison – Hyph Mngo
Skream – Perferated
