I’ve got to admit, when Lupe Fiasco released the first single “Shining Down” from his upcoming album, I was apprehensive. Had Lupe finally sold out? The track sounded as if he was just trying to capitalize on the success of songs like “Fighters” and “Superstar”, without putting any sort of new spin on it. In short, it was boring. However, the release of his newest mixtape, “Enemy of the State: a Love Affair” has brought back a good deal of my faith in the Fiasco. Lupe spits on some pretty surprising beats, including Lil’ Wayne’s smash hit “Fireman”, but it seems to work out in the end. Here are my two favorites off the tape, the first of which brings us Lupe’s rhymes over the instrumentals of Radiohead (not so surprising after the sample in “Us Placers”), the second is Lupe’s take on Clipse’s “Popular Demand”. Grab the whole tape here.
