hello kitty is a nun

Pardon the long hiatus. I’m in Argentina right now with very limited internet but I needed to share the gold that Argentinian television has given me. It’s like Pee Wee Herman mixed with Hello Kitty as a nun and the Roman Forum. Happy new year!

Our Favourites of 2009

2009logo

(artwork by Mr. Scribbles)

Myself and the other writers of this blog had the idea to start up a new project in early April.  What has come of our effort has been unbelievably rewarding. I’d like to thank all of the artists who keep sending us music, all of our readers, and the writers personally. Keep doing you.

Below are the lists of our favorite aspects of music for the year of 2009. This year was an incredibly good year for all genres, especially the ones we regularly feature on this page. Electronic music is exploding in all directions right in front of us, and we are lucky to be in such an exciting time for it. Next year we will try to feature a wider array of artists, everything from folk to rock to hip-hop along with the usual styles we post. Be sure to bookmark this page, you will not be disappointed :).

Again, I cannot thank our readers enough for coming back to this page. Please add your own two cents to this whole “favorites” thing in the comments section, we would love to hear everyone’s opinion. Without further ado…

let’s mix

So Let’s Mix just partnered up with Pioneer, Beatport, and DJ Mag, launching the Next Generation DJ competition. Basically the winner gets some awesome prizes that include two brand new CDJs from Pioneer. To qualify for the prizes your mix needs a minimum of 200 votes and then after that average votes are what count. Head over to the site and upload a mix of your own! I threw mine up on the site yesterday right here and I would reallllly appreciate it if you guys could check it out. It’s the same mix as the one I posted a few weeks ago so if you heard it then it’s nothing all too fresh (although I’d still love if you could check it out on the site!). Good luck to all. thank you erol boards

In the past few months I’ve become legitimately addicted to the Erol Alkan Boards. Their general boards are hilarious but, more importantly, their Track ID board has a ridiculous success rate and this track was no different. What started out as a “Chuckie ‘Let The Bass Kick’ Remix???” wound up showing me an awesome track by another Sneakerz artist: Dave Darell (thanks neoteric for the track id!). Check out this awesome dutch house track (and feel free to note in the comment section if you think it sounds at all like ‘Let The Bass Kick’).

it’s the loop digga

As always, props to Rob Booth over at Electronic Explorations for hosting some of the most interesting artists in dance music for his radio show. For this past week’s show, the decks were home to Loops Haunt, a producer whose tunes lie somewhere between the realms of hip hop, wonky, and straight noise. I highly recommend a download of this show, as he’s put some real creativity into the mixing and selection. Look out for this guy in 2010, he’s got some pretty big releases lined up.

Up-and-coming Croydon dubsteppers L.A. Boxers dropped some love in the box recently, in the form of a delicious remix of Calvin Harris‘ “Flashback”.  Not as thumping as some of their previous work, but definitely still worth a listen.  The Boxers preserved Calvin Harris’ vibes perfectly, while adding their own blend of dubstep to the mix.  The track would serve wonderfully as a hip-hop beat for someone like Curren$y; it’s all airy synths and thumping kick.  (As always, the Croydon boys have been kind enough to provide us with the full 320. Cheers!)

On a bit of a different note, Philly electro-jam band The Disco Biscuits sent us some new stuff in promotion of their new album “Planet Anthem”.  The first track is an original, which sees Bisco taking a bit of a different route than they had previously; the tune sounds more crafted for a club dancefloor than a hippy festival.  After that comes the longest remix I’ve heard in a very long while, with The Juan Maclean‘s ten minute long take on Bisco’s “You and I”, from their “Widgets” EP.  Enjoy those tunes, and keep an eye out for “Planet Anthem”, which drops February 2nd.

bibio

More ambient grooves coming at you today.  I’ve recently discovered Bibio, aka Stephen Wilkinson, producer from West Midlands, UK (thanks for the tip, Dani).  Very Boards of Canada, but with a more folky / funky / upbeat vibe at times.  Bibio has been hard at work this year, with the release of three albums, Vignetting the Compost (Feb. 3), Ambivalence Avenue (June 22), and The Apple and the Tooth (Nov. 10).  He got signed into Warp Records this year, joining the label of Aphex Twin, DJ Mujava, Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke.  This track, Sugarette, comes from Ambivalence Avenue.  Head over to beatport to show your support.

Exciting news today, with the release of a free mixtape of previously unreleased material from Slum Village veteran Elzhi, who put out “The Preface”, which I would say was the best hip-hop album of ’08.  The mixtape, “The Leftovers”, features unreleased Elzhi material with production credits from Black Milk, Oh No and Jake One, with featured MCs like Big Pooh and Fes Roc.  Here’s an unreleased Black Milk-produced Elzhi joint off the tape, but grab the whole thing on his site for free.
