Poppa Glock’s Favorites of 2011
Each year the Squeegie writers like to compile a list of their favorite tunes to share with the world . We saw tons of shows and listened to a ton of music, so we hope everyone can find something to suit their tastes in our wrap up. We wish you all the best and safe partying in 2012! So without further adieu in no particular order… (I tried to include as many promotional DL’s as possible so be sure to check each track, and as always, if you would like anything removed please contact us).
Dillon Francis – Westside EP (Mad Decent)
This may not excite some people, but it goes without saying that the young kid from Los Angeles Dillon Francis has had a fantastic year in music. It started with his track “Westside”, which established support from artists like Drop the Lime, Diplo, and Sinden, which resulted in the track’s official debut on Mad Decent. Since his debut, he has worked with the Dim Mak, Plant Music and Top Billin Labels and remixed everyone from Kill the Noise to Digitalism. Watch out for some new releases in 2012. Buy the EP here.
Digitalism - Circles (Dillon Francis Remix)
Stade 2 Mr. Oizo
Ed Banger saw a tough year in 2011. While mourning the tragic death of the French electro and hip hop producer DJ Medhi, they still managed to keep a steady output of interesting tunes releasing new material from Justice, Sebastian, and Mr. Oizo. The second studio album from the Frenchmen is a hectic clash of house, breakbeat, and electro, bending the limits of sound design when it comes to synthesizers. The single “Douche Beat” has been blowing up dancefloors all year. Check the Choreo edit below or buy the full album.
Mr. Oizo - Douche Beat (Choreo Edit)ZZT – Partys Over Earth
I absolutely loved this record. Not only was it classic ZZT, it showcased the collaboration of two legendary producers putting their best foot forward when it comes to avant-guarde, techno-banger party music. Turbo supports some of the best producers all over the world, including Azari & III, Clouds, and Proxy. Their recently implemented digital sister label Twin-Turbo hopes to continue to supply DJ’s and clubs with fresh tunes. Grab the free giveaway from turbo below – Paul Chambers remixes ZZT – and head over to your digital retailer for their album “Partys Over Earth” or just grab it here.
ZZT - Partys Over Los Angeles (Paul Chambers Remix)Bingo Players – Rattle
The Bingo Players made their return in 2011 with two singles. Definately need to shout out “Cry, Just a Little” and “Mode” here, but after coming from TAO last night and hearing “Rattle” shut down the place I’m giving it a spot on the list. Looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Bingo Players next year. Grab a free remix from Arizona’s 2ToneDisco below. Amazon/Juno/Beatport
Bingo Players - Rattle (2ToneDisco Bootleg)SCNTST
Kicking off 2011 with the release of their stacked compilation paying homage to acid house, Boys Noize continued to release fun tracks all year, but their standout was an EP titled “Monday” by an 18-year old producer from Munich. Be sure to check out his remix of “Rise and Fall” by Donovans and his upcoming remix of Modek “By the Pool” out January 9. “909 Time” is a stellar track. Well done. Pick it up from Boys Noize Records here.
SCNTST - 909 TimeMetronomy – The Bay (Remix)
Big Beat, a subsidiary of WMG, manages to put out some quality tunes from time to time. They put out “The English Riviera” from Joseph Mount early in the year, but it has held steady as a modern classic that blends funky disco and indie rock. Erol Alkan’s rework of “The Bay” is proper. Perfect for the club or just doing the dishes. Definately a top remix of the year. Buy
Julio Bashmore – Battle for Middle You
Such an essential tune on the soundtrack of the year. Julio Bashmore is just an incredible producer. We here at Squeegie enjoyed reviewing his releases in 2011 and are exciting to hear some new output from him in the future. He had incredible releases with PMR Recordings, Futureboogie, and 3024. Buy
Julio Bashmore - Battle for Middle YouModeselektor – Monkeytown (Album)
How else do I say it. This was the shit. Another fantastic record from Berlin duo Modeselektor on their Monkeytown imprint. “Monkeytown”, the groups third full-length album, has a little bit of everything. Must listens include “German Clap”, “Blue Clouds”, “Berlin”, and “Evil Twin” below. Buy it from Monkeytown Records.
Com Truise – Galactic Melt (Album)
Raw shit from Ghostly International. New York producer Com Truise showcases his visionary psychedelic electronica. The opening track “Terminal” is an instant indication of the caliber of this full-length. Unmatched arpeggios, beautiful vintage sounding synths, an all around joy to listen to. “Cathode Girls” is a personal favorite of mine. Buy
Knife Party
This is another artist I was hesitant to give honorable mention to, but such an interesting side project not many people know is the collaborative efforts of the band Pendulum. They grew their fan base remixing Porter Robinson, Nero, and Swedish House Mafia soon to release their debut EP ironically titled Knife Party – “100% No Modern Talking”, an ode to the synth that characterizes their sound. Buy
Knife Party - TourniquetBack On the Grind: Congorock
Congorock had an incredibly fresh year reinventing himself with the release of two huge singles on Ultra Records. The dark, electro jam “Sirius” and the jungly, fat lead of “Ivory” remixed by the Bloody Beetroots. Had the pleasure of seeing him in Hollywood this year and he had the place packed. Looking forward to more quality originals from Congorock. Buy
Congorock - SiriusBest Live Set – Zed’s Dead
I had the pleasure of seeing Zed’s Dead on two occasions this year. First, at Pacific Festival in Orange County where they threw down to a crowd of about 400 in the middle of the California desert. The second time was at Hard Haunted Mansion Los Angeles where they DJ’d in full costumes. It’s certainly loud and in your face, but they get people sweating no doubt.
To Watch In 2012: Etnik
Etnik hails from Hamburg, Germany. His dark techno bangers have helped him already gain support from top DJ’s. Grab his remix of “Variations” below and be on the lookout for his upcoming tune with SCNTST titled “Scanner”.
