Paul Devro interview @ MDBP

I can’t even grow something slightly resembling a mustache.

Surrounded by blaring airhorns and incredibly quiet speakers due to a busted generator, I was lucky enough to be able to interview Paul Devro at Chicago’s Mad Decent party, with Orpheus doing his thang, recording the interview with his iPhone. While the prolonged speaker outage put a damper on the madness for an hour or so, it allowed us to speak ad nauseam with the self-proclaimed creative director of Mad Decent. Being able to interview someone I truly admire was cool enough in the first place, and my fascination only increased after the interview. Why was that? Read on and see.

Squeegie: If you had a job description what would you say it would be?

Paul Devro: I newly am calling myself creative director for Mad Decent, because I do a little bit of everything. I do graphics, release decisions, and I work for/do the website. I work on tracks for the label and stuff, so I do a little bit of everything. But I say creative director because I think I do some creative stuff for it, you know?

S: How did you start out with Mad Decent? And how did your position evolve to what it is now?

PD: First, Wes (Diplo) asked me to remix a track for the Bonde do Role for the first release on Mad Decent, and then I had a website and he asked me to move my website and bring it over to MadDecent.com. So I did that, and I just slowly started doing a little bit more and more here and there.

clap clap clap clap

Lots of posts lately from me, lots of music lately from others. Some of you guys may know Sia as the singer of Zero 7. She’s about to come out with a new solo album and Diplo remixed one of her singles called ‘Clap Your Hands’. It’s a nice sub-driven, slowed down track that adds some hand claps that make it well rounded (how were there no hand claps in a song about clapping in the first place I’ll never get).

my first mega post (part 1 of 2)

I would like to start out by apologizing for lack of posting on my behalf lately. Life was hectic and I intend to make it up to you guys with this giant post and the delightful kitten! Some of the goodies after the jump (I have too many songs for one mega post so there will be two mega posts, here we go!)

big things to be

Oh happy day! Got a new track submission from Jayou himself. I have a feeling that you’ll be seeing and/or hearing this one a lot on other blogs, and for good reason. This producer of the UK, if you don’t already know him, has been doing big things in the last 12 months or so, inlcuding a guest mix with Mad Decent, a collabo with Diplo and a slew of heavy and impressive tracks along the way! “Crack Hands,” “Blue Magic,” and “Zub” are must gets if you havent heard them already. He’s got another mix coming out on Mad Decent by the end of April, so be on the look out for that too. But for now, enjoy this one and show the man some love, in any form you can think.  Enjoy and be easy.

bacardi and cola, do it. do it.

There’s this awesome trend going on right now in electronic music where all these companies are discovering what a fantastic demographic us blogheads are. The true beauty, though, has come from alcoholic beverage companies trying to appeal to us (free alcohol + free tunes = yeaahhh). Bacardi has done this perhaps better than any other with their B-Live series. So far they’ve recruited Diplo, Drop the Lime, Brodinski, Classixx, and others to the cause and they just added two other heavy hitters: Edu K and Mixhell. Don’t sleep on this, it’s 320 nastysauce™.

free gucci!

Hello one and all. I would like to begin this post by apologizing for the ridiculous delays between posts lately. I’ve just begun the whole frat thing at college and shit is time consuming. With that taken care of, let’s get down to music.

Squeegie favorite Gucci Mane has enjoyed the support of many in the musical industry, especially in blogging circles and the like. One of his biggest fans happens to be an artist known for taking on great projects and sometimes bringing more popular music to the blogging masses: Diplo. With this in mind, Diplo decided to collaborate with a ton of your favorite producers and make a Gucci Mane only mixtape and goddamn it’s hot. Featuring tracks from: Diplo, Bird Peterson, Brodinski, Douster, Flying Lotus, Mumdance, DZ, and my main main Willy Joy. Needless to say, Un. Fucking. Real.

I’ll give you guys a few tracks but you neeeeed to get the whole mixtape, it’s too good. To make it better, it’s free (my favorite number). Get the mixtape here.

Diplo has commissioned a remix album for Gucci Mane‘s Cold War mixtape series, definitely a dream collaboration in my eyes. Both artists have been doing big things this year, and this forthcoming mixtape should prove to be very interesting. Gucci‘s full length will be out on the 8th of December and the mixtape will follow. As a gift, check out the Bangladesh produced “Lemonade” that I do not expect to stop repeating in my iTunes for quite some time.

New goodies from longtime Squeegie favorite, Drop The Lime, have arrived in the dropbox today, in the form of a massive track by the name of “Devil’s Eyes”.  Brooklyn’s favorite has done it again on this one- it does not disappoint.  Also included is his remix of the track, which bangs a bit harder than the original.  Remixes from Diplo, Classixx, and Kanji Kinetic are en route, so keep your ears peeled for those.

girl i wanna

It pleases me so much to see a group come through the scene showing so much potential. With only over a hundred plays on their myspace, Switch decided to give Savage Skulls a record on Dubsided, and it has been incredibly well received and I suggest buying it quick like. Be sure to head over to FVCV or HB or Electric Zoo to pick up their remix of Miike Snow, a near eight minute electro-house masterpiece which builds up to some glitched out siren infused drops. This time however, we have their track for Major Lazer (not ‘Pon de Floor’ yay!) that’s had support from Diplo and what have you. It’s hard to listen to another ML remix, I know, but this is just too good to ignore. Big latin and funky vibes on this one, definitely capturing the sound of the moment. I’m not sure about any sort of official release, so it’s all 320 here. Biggups to fuckthatworld.

Pardon the lack of postage. I was just camping in the wilderness for 8 days and I didn’t have no internets. Anyways, Sharkslayer have been making some really big tunes in 2009. Diplo dropped their remix of Digital Manges‘Manges’ in his essential mix (and at Lollapalooza) and it is one of my favorite songs of 2009 so far. They come back with this big ass remix of a tune whose original I really liked. Peep this remix of Daniel Haaksman.
