chord: Ahu – To:Love. (Dimlite Remix)

Dimlite has never been one to follow a pattern; his productions meld jazz, ambience, electronica and hip-hop for a final product that is simply unlike anything else.  His latest remix, of Ahu‘s “To:Love.” (originally produced by One-Handed Music label-mate Paul White) is a prime example.  The track is not electronic, nor can it realistically be called hip-hop; with live harpsichord and drums from Dimlite, Ahu & White’s trip-hop tinged creation becomes something almost entirely new, with an urgent tension not present in the original.  I haven’t been so enamored of a harpsichord melody since “Golden Brown“.  The original can be downloaded for free here, and a purchase will grant you the instrumental, along with Dimlite’s remix and an instrumental of that as well.  And if Ahu’s voice sounds familiar, it’s for a reason; she collaborated with Flying Lotus under the name Dolly, providing vocals for “Roberta Flack“.

splatter: Teebs – Ardour LP

(Ardour artwork by Teebs)

In an environment perpetuated with short-term goals and get-famous-quick promo e-mails, artists like LA’s Teebs are real diamonds in the rough. The 23 year-old visual artist and sonic landscaper has found a home amongst Flying LotusBrainfeeder crew and the ever-growing California forward-thinking experimental hip-hop scene, but really gained some exposure from a free mixtape of beats so good it seemed wrong to click the download button. Over the past two years, Teebs has had releases on Brainfeeder and the unique Svetlana industries; a two-part EP and remix pack with the UK’s Jackhigh. His debut album, Ardour, looks towards an October release date and has already made some serious ripples among tastemakers like Mary Anne Hobbs, Gaslamp Killer, and of course FlyLo. The limited vinyl for “The Tropics” has long since gone, but be sure to pick up the mp3 release here and sit tight for Ardour.

fill the void: Lorn – Nothing Else LP

As one big thing after another seem to come from Brainfeeder, Lorn follows up Flying LotusCosmogramma with an ominous, dark, and impressive album in Nothing Else. From the very beginning, post-apocalyptic cinematics begin to tell a story, a narrative that trails throughout the LP. Unlike many of his peers, Lorn doesn’t just make sick beats to make them. Each song has its own purpose and follows no rules, with the tempo range running wild from 80 to 135. “Tomorrow” sets the stage, but the track that really captivates is “Bretagne”; a thumping filtered beat and Ratatat-esque backward synth pulses showcase his ability as a producer as well as his creative vision for this album. Nothing Else never quits on you either, each track seems to be better than the last. Be sure to support Lorn and Brainfeeder on the 8th of June by picking this puppy up, as I’m sure you’re car speakers will be ruined by the end of the summer as a consequence.

As a little goodie to share, the nice people at Alpha Pup have offered up “Cherry Moon”. If you had any doubts about buying this CD, those should be pushed right on to the side.

Here is a preview of the new FlyLo album (Cosmogramma), with two tracks getting out there by way of experimental sound pusher Gilles Peterson on Radio 1. Pre-order the whole thing @ bleep to support one of our generations most interesting producers.

And if someone can tell me the name of this Flying Lotus track ripped (sketchy, sorry) from Gaslamp Killer‘s Sonar set last year you will make me a very happy man.

free gucci!

Hello one and all. I would like to begin this post by apologizing for the ridiculous delays between posts lately. I’ve just begun the whole frat thing at college and shit is time consuming. With that taken care of, let’s get down to music.

Squeegie favorite Gucci Mane has enjoyed the support of many in the musical industry, especially in blogging circles and the like. One of his biggest fans happens to be an artist known for taking on great projects and sometimes bringing more popular music to the blogging masses: Diplo. With this in mind, Diplo decided to collaborate with a ton of your favorite producers and make a Gucci Mane only mixtape and goddamn it’s hot. Featuring tracks from: Diplo, Bird Peterson, Brodinski, Douster, Flying Lotus, Mumdance, DZ, and my main main Willy Joy. Needless to say, Un. Fucking. Real.

I’ll give you guys a few tracks but you neeeeed to get the whole mixtape, it’s too good. To make it better, it’s free (my favorite number). Get the mixtape here.

Our Favourites of 2009

2009logo

(artwork by Mr. Scribbles)

Myself and the other writers of this blog had the idea to start up a new project in early April.  What has come of our effort has been unbelievably rewarding. I’d like to thank all of the artists who keep sending us music, all of our readers, and the writers personally. Keep doing you.

Below are the lists of our favorite aspects of music for the year of 2009. This year was an incredibly good year for all genres, especially the ones we regularly feature on this page. Electronic music is exploding in all directions right in front of us, and we are lucky to be in such an exciting time for it. Next year we will try to feature a wider array of artists, everything from folk to rock to hip-hop along with the usual styles we post. Be sure to bookmark this page, you will not be disappointed :).

Again, I cannot thank our readers enough for coming back to this page. Please add your own two cents to this whole “favorites” thing in the comments section, we would love to hear everyone’s opinion. Without further ado…

finals suck

I’m a week away from my final exams (aka a week away from winter break) and all I’ve been doing is studying. As a child of our generation merely studying is not enough stimulation for me so whenever I study I have to have music on in the background. Three things have gotten me through the studying relatively unharmed: Flying Lotus, Style of Eye’s Essential Mix (I’ve listened 5+ times this week), and Nic Sarno‘s newest mix. The last one has been doing wonders for me these last two days, it’s just beautiful. Sure, it’s long as fuck (a bit over two hours) but I promise it’s worth the listen. Far from being a mix full of bangers, this one takes you on a melodious ride. Everything from spliced up Wu-Tang to Claude VonStroke to Noob to some weird ass German shit. All hail Sarno. No tracklist yet, I’ll update if one becomes available.

PS. Forgot about our Sarno interview? Well that’s a shame. Don’t worry, here it is.

feed your brain

Starting off the month properly, one of the most interesting minds in hip hop Flying Lotus has released his group of Weezy projects through the Brainfeeder website. The beats are ridiculous. Grab the whole thing on zshare here, but if you need to be convinced first, get the track below directly.

Shout out all the artists sharing music for free like this, we love it! However, make sure you get out there and support FlyLo and the rest of the Brainfeeder crew so they can keep coming with output like this.

u messin’ with my emotions

Some big news here. Jazz artist Jose James just released a remix EP for his song “Black Magic” with some big supporting names. Not only is the original produced by production wizard and trip-hop front-runner Flying Lotus, but this recently released EP contains tunes from Squeegie regulars Untold, Joy Orbison, and two others by Izmabad and dOP. Really creative stuff on this EP, so just throw down the $3.98 on iTunes and enjoy. Expect the full length from Jose due out early next year on Gilles Peterson‘s Brownswood Recordings.

A quick chat with the dynamic dutchman who’s been quite busy over the past few months. Enjoy.

Flying Lotus – Breathe (Brabe Bootleg)

Brabe – June 09 Mix (Mediafire)

S: Hey Brabe! Welcome to the Squeegie fam. From where are you based?

B: Hey! I’m currently living in Amstelveen, a small and shitty suburb on the southside of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

s: What’s in store for Brabe in the coming months? EPs? Remixes? Tour?

B: I’ve been making quite alot of new stuff the past few months! I’ve made several remixes to appear on Prompt Digital and Electric Sushi, and I did a Crookers remix, which will be released on Man Recordings. I’ve also got some EP’s in various flavours coming up; some weird, typical “Brabey” tracks on ESP, and some more deep house-ish tracks, appearing on Electric Sushi and Urban Torque. I also recently finished a couple of breakcore/minimal tracks that are probably just too weird and fucked up to find a label for, and I’ll be making some co-op stuff together with Robert Boogert soon. After the holidays I’ll be trying to get some more gigs, next year will be a lot less strenuous than the past year has been for me, so I’ll finally be able to focus more on DJ’ing.
