tally-ho: George Lenton – Stay Around ft. Jack da Lad

Wikipedia says “the phrase ‘tally-ho’ is a largely British phrase, used in foxhunting, shouted when a rider sees the fox.”  For us grime-hunters, on the other hand, seeing “the fox” may just result in a hardy head rock, like in the case of George Lenton‘s new track, “Stay Around,” released this week on Skint‘s sub-label, Under 5.  While I’m as tired of wobble-step as the next bloke, Lenton’s synthesis of sub and fluttering pitches with the vocals of UK rapper, Jack da Lad, are enough to keep his new single fresh (and heavy).  Take a listen, Lenton doesn’t disappoint.  Purchase the original/instrumental on Beatport.

switch up the language: George Lenton

The past six months or so have seen George Lenton‘s sound evolving to considerable effect.  Straying from his aggressive dubstep style, he’s now dabbling in the more melodic side of things, and no longer limits himself to the sounds of dub.  Fresh from his remixes of Swizz Beatz and Lil Wayne, the UK native gives us a wonderful remix of “As We Enter” the lead (and best) single from Damian Marley & Nas‘ rather underwhelming Distant Relatives collaboration album (in my opinion they did exactly what they were trying to avoid, and a made a pretentious “raise awareness” album rather than the “something you can play in your car” that Marley initially said it would be); Lenton’s remix provides an interesting contrast of sound, with heavy house rhythms accenting the reggae undertones of the original.  After that comes “Paulie”, a tribal-tinged dubstep number that aptly showcases Lenton’s skill in vocal sampling.  George has been a big Squeegie supporter since our earliest days, and watching his progression and maturation as an artist has been great.

Musicians, as you probably know, can be very busy people.  George Lenton sent in a Squeegie birthday mini-mix today, and it’s a fantastic little chunk of belated birthday bass.  As a mini-mix, it does a great job of showcasing Lenton’s impeccable taste, jumping from genre to genre while maintaining a pretty serious low end throughout. Tracklist is after the jump.

got no money

Returning from his melodic side to the sounds of the dancefloor, George Lenton has crafted a party-friendly remix of “Money In The Bank”, showcasing a hip-hop element not seen before in his productions and choosing to forgo mid-range wobbles for a slower, mid-range tempo more reminiscent of something Busta Rhymes might spit over.

One of the things I love most about music blogging is watching the progression and maturation of an artist’s sound.  George Lenton has come a long way in recent years, with his latest EP Midnight showcasing a sound that is much deeper and more melodic than the thumping dubstep for which he has gained recognition.  His take on Al Green’s “Simply Beautiful” would fit in better with the likes of Massive Attack than Excision; nowhere on the EP will you find the abrasive energy of tracks like “Jungle Whomp”, and while I’m sure he’s not finished with that sound, this new direction of his is very refreshing.  Without further ado, the Midnight EP:

George Lenton has shown Squeegie love since our very first days, and that love shows no signs of stopping.  His latest, “Kerloo”, forgoes wobbles in favor of some deeper bass territory, accented with 8-bit stabs and vocal samples that bring the whole thing together for an impressive final product.  Look out for big things from Mr. Lenton in the future, with a slew of releases on the way.

don’t be sorry

George Lenton has graced the blog community yet again with some fantastic originals that really showcase his abilities as a multifaceted producer.  ”Sorry” is a big tune, great vocals over his unique wobs, and some big bass.  Loving it.  And then “San Angel” is very chilled out.  Totally different, but I’m digging that one too.  Give em a listen

the baddest of men

l_976b57f8292828b424cf65a83c982d1bHaven’t done one of these in a long while.  Here we go.  Mike Mago of Amsterdam recently put out an oh so jummy EP available at most of the download sites.  This is my favorite of the whole lot of them.  A buildup that would have an audience on their knees begging by the end to a banger fidgety drop.  It’s getting a lot of praise and you should get to know this guy for sure.

RedeyzI know we’ve posted enough DZ in the past month or so to fill up a CD, can’t blame us, but this next one is to hype up another Badman Press guy, Redeyz.  You can pick up a free original off the badman press blog, Callous.  It’s big.  This one is big as well.  Samples Transformers and that pleases me, as a lot of this heavier, “brostep,” grinding dub music reminds me of intergalactic robots fighting for peace.  Nice.

George Lenton sent over his new track, and I know a few blogs out there beat us to it, but shut up and enjoy it.  He never disappoints! The vocals complete this track completely and thank god for that bass!

Alrighty, sorry in advance. Doctor P some would say is getting a disgusting amount of hype and recognition right now and no one likes over-hype, but how could he not with Gargoyle, Sweet Shop, Rasputins Gold, and my fave of the moment and reason for posting, Badman Sound, shown to me by the glorious MacGregor, under his belt? I got a little rip here, cannot waiiiit for his new stuff to be available for full 320 download!  Break your neck to this till then.

so take a bath

559141375_lhello.  I came across Belgian dubstep producer Lebelgeelectrod completely by happenstance.  And I’m pretty excited about that.  He’s been making dem beats for a while, and I cannot figure out why he’s still got under 20,000 on myspace, ’cause these are excellent.  Have a sampling.  He’s working away at some new stuff so look out.  And I completely agree…life is just a wobble bass (?).

Downlink dubber

Okay, so start running the water for the bath you’ll need after you partake in some listening to these.  Downlink, if I was to compare to other artists’ styles, would fall in the Datsik and Excision family for sure.  First got interested in him from his track “Gamma Ray Burst” which is rawesome.  (Yes, rawesome).  These are some amazing samplers for you.

Bonus: George Lenton sent over his “One More Time” remix the other day.  Been loving this track for a while now, and it’s been around, but here ya go.  Very upbeat dubstep.  Love it.

Cold Rock-er

coldrock

(Cold Rock… the lesser-known competitor and/or predecessor to Cold Stone)

George Lenton, dub step producer from the UK, sent over his new original today, “Cold Rocker” — a nice tune with some solid hip hop sampling.  Apparently, the employees at Cold Rock (the aforementioned establishment) are referred to as “Cold Rockers” and are known for smashing crazy flavors of ice cream together.  Who knew?  I’m also including a promo track from Mr. Lenton.  Take a gander…
