ascending: Major Lazer – When You Hear The Bassline (Tony Senghore remix)

Dude seriously needs new promo pictures. This is the only one I’ve ever seen.

As I’m sure you guys know as well as I do, it seems everyone and their mother remixed every Major Lazer track to death with positive results usually feeling temporary without much withstanding the test of time and keeping my interest. Tony Senghore, however, piqued my interest a long time ago (November 2009 or so) when I saw a video of him playing out his remix of ‘When You Hear The Bassline’. It sounded crazy but release details were murky. Luckily for us, the remix has finally come out and slays just as hard as I expected it to. I strongly, strongly recommend downloading this track. Thanks to Louis Louis for the tip on this finally being released and especially for Chew the Fat for including this in their newest compilation. They’re celebrating their 13th anniversary with a big party and a free compilation with some huge artists. Check it out here.

put the coffee on: Cajmere – Percolator 2010

This track has been a staple of Chicago house ever since it came out in 1992. It’s been re-vamped and mastered for this year, and includes a pack of remixes from Riva Starr, Major Lazer, Gant Man, and Claude VonStroke (lawwwwwwddddamercy) among others. Hear the CVS mix exclusively on URB for now, and stamp your calendars for the 30th of August to pick up the full release.

Our Favourites of 2009

2009logo

(artwork by Mr. Scribbles)

Myself and the other writers of this blog had the idea to start up a new project in early April.  What has come of our effort has been unbelievably rewarding. I’d like to thank all of the artists who keep sending us music, all of our readers, and the writers personally. Keep doing you.

Below are the lists of our favorite aspects of music for the year of 2009. This year was an incredibly good year for all genres, especially the ones we regularly feature on this page. Electronic music is exploding in all directions right in front of us, and we are lucky to be in such an exciting time for it. Next year we will try to feature a wider array of artists, everything from folk to rock to hip-hop along with the usual styles we post. Be sure to bookmark this page, you will not be disappointed :).

Again, I cannot thank our readers enough for coming back to this page. Please add your own two cents to this whole “favorites” thing in the comments section, we would love to hear everyone’s opinion. Without further ado…

jackin beats

(Thank you Orpheus for filming this)

Along with Orpheus and Macgregor I was just in New York, New York to witness a crazy ass show. In one night we saw Jack Beats along with Crookers, Major Lazer, Rusko, and Destructo at Hard NYC (what a fucking lineup, NYC holler). Shit was crazy, can’t even describe it. We’ll have a post coming up with our favorite tracks from the show but until then we’ve got some Jack Beats goodness to hold you over. Jack Beats just did a guest mix for Kissy Sell Out on Radio 1 and damn it is huge. It’s got a lot of their upcoming bangers as well as one of my most desired upcoming tracks, Lee Mortimer and Laidback Luke‘s ‘Blau’ (rip from a previous post). Check the mix out and see the bangers that Jack Beats has coming up for all of us (thanks trashcanpunch for the tip).  If you have any of these tracks besides the obvious ones hit us up with em, they’re all huge. Tracklist after the jump.

girl i wanna

It pleases me so much to see a group come through the scene showing so much potential. With only over a hundred plays on their myspace, Switch decided to give Savage Skulls a record on Dubsided, and it has been incredibly well received and I suggest buying it quick like. Be sure to head over to FVCV or HB or Electric Zoo to pick up their remix of Miike Snow, a near eight minute electro-house masterpiece which builds up to some glitched out siren infused drops. This time however, we have their track for Major Lazer (not ‘Pon de Floor’ yay!) that’s had support from Diplo and what have you. It’s hard to listen to another ML remix, I know, but this is just too good to ignore. Big latin and funky vibes on this one, definitely capturing the sound of the moment. I’m not sure about any sort of official release, so it’s all 320 here. Biggups to fuckthatworld.

Major Lazer Essential Mix

(If only this was real..)

Major Lazer just dropped their essential mix and absolutely wrecked it, they just lit the tables on fire. Diplo plays the first hour with Switch taking control for the 2nd and the mix of styles works really, really well. We here at Squeegie are even nice enough to hit you up with a direct link, chyeah. Tracklist after the jump.

Toadally Krossed Out interview

(Toadally Krossed Out + Kid CuDi at SXSW)

Hello blogosphere, Brookah here with what is (as far as I know) Toadally Krossed Out’s first interview ever. Pretty cool stuff. They pretty much leapfrogged (ha) onto the scene a few months ago when they closed out the Mad Decent show and, to everyone’s delight. They’ve been releasing solid stuff ever since with remixes of Buraka Som Sistema and Major Lazer to date. Without further ado, we bring you Toadally Krossed Out.

Toadally Krossed Out – Toads Theme

Buraka Som Sistema – IC19 (Toadally Krossed Out Remix)

Squeegie: Hey guys, welcome to Squeegie. How about we start with an intro, who are you guys and where are you from?

Toadally Krossed Out: Were just a couple of lads from around the way that grew up in and around Wales.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH

majorlazersouthparkred

Holy shit. This is the biggest drop from Mad Decent (can’t show them enough love) in a while, best tune all month for me. This is a song you play in front of a lot of people, and expect no response; they are too busy being destroyed by an atomic bomb of a kick drum. As Skream describes it, “some old school dubstep flavors”, you really need to download a track that only he could pull off…

Major Lazer – Hold the Line (Skream Remix)

SonicC interview

Witness the chaos that ensues above, then find out a little about the young man behind it. Phra‘s hand motions before the drop epitomize the awesomeness of this track.

SonicC – Stickin’

S: What’s up Sonic? From where are you writing us today?

SC: From beautiful Miami Florida.

S: So you’re 17? I thought I was young… How did you know you wanted to start producing music at such a young age?

SC: Well I basically just started off as a listener to house, and really liked the mainstream commercial stuff (which is what I first heard). Then I started djing and like any good dj I wanted to have exclusive mashups, edits etc; then that turned into making remixes, then I went all the way into making my own tracks… It’s not really something I thought I would do or even wanted to do until I really started producing, so in a way I wanted to start producing when i did start producing.

S: Where do you draw inspiration from? What/who are some of your biggest influences? read more »
